DAILY POSITION REPORTS
The position tables are the reports generated by the Race Committee at the end of morning roll call which is conducted at 0800 PDT and reports the 0600 PDT position of the yacht.
While the positions are recorded at this time the roll call begins after and takes a while to complete. It typically takes between two and two and a half hours for this information to be posted on this page.
Expect to find this report posted here at about 10:30 AM.

Position Report Legend

The following abbreviations are used in the daily standings reports:

ID Yacht identification number used in the roll call report
YACHT Yacht name abbreviation in the report
LAT Latitude
LON Longitude
DST 2GO Distance to the finish line
CORR TIME Corrected time based on the yacht's rating
STDGS Yachts current rank in its class (CL) and overall in the fleet (FL)
AVE SOC Average speed over course calculated by dividing the distance traveled by the current time since the yacht started
24H DOC Distance traveled in the last twenty-four hours
24H SOC Speed based on the last twenty-four hour distance (24H DOC divided by 24)
FIN TIME/ETA This is either the ETA (calculated by (DST 2GO divided by AVE SOC) or the actual finish time of the yacht. Both of these are in Hawaii Standard Time (PDT - 3 Hrs.). The format is DD/HH:MM where DD is the day of the month, HH is hour of that day and MM is minute of that hour.

There are many methods to calculate an ETA. It doesn't matter how you do it there is always the chance for error in this type of prediction.

One method we use in Hawaii is to base the ETA on the average speed for the previous three full twenty-four hour periods. This works *provided* that the speeds are similar and the sailing conditions do not change. We've had good success with this approach when the yachts are within 500 nautical miles of the finish line (approximately two to four days out).

Remember, all methods are prone to errors. The best source of reasonably accurate ETA data comes from the yachts themselves. As they approach the Diamond Head finish line each yacht is required to check in and provide the Honolulu Committee with an ETA. These reports come at distances of 100 nautical miles (seven to twelve hours) 25 nautical miles (one and a helf to three hours) and the Makapuu report (approximately seven nautical miles or thirty to sixty minutes). We will provide a page listing these reports that will be available soon (probably Sunday morning when the first reports are expected).
