43rd Biennial Transpacific Yacht Race / Los Angeles to Hawaii Transpacific Yacht Club, Jerry Montgomery, Commodore July 1, 2005 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TRANSPAC TWO WEEKS AWAY; TRANSPAC VILLAGE BUSTLING WITH ACTIVITY LONG BEACH, CA --- Gary Schneider stands on the deck of Shoreline Yacht Club with a dying cell phone beeping in his ear.
This is the life of a yacht club Commodore on a mission to provide the yachting community with outstanding hospitality. He and the members of Shoreline Yacht Club have been quietly, but methodically preparing the future home of the Transpac Village for the arrival of boats, crews, and thousands of Sea Fest visitors. The planning committee in conjunction with the city of Long Beach has been meeting regularly to ensure that the festivities of the Sea Fest and Transpac Village represent the best that Long Beach, California has to offer. Among the most important of these preparations are information packets that will be given to visiting skippers and crew to assist in finding their way around the city of Long Beach. Included in the fifteen-page packet are restaurants, lodging, repair facilities, emergency services, hospitals, places of worship and marine equipment retailers. The visiting Transpac racers will also be assigned their own slip in Rainbow Harbor where the visiting public will be able to get an up-close and personal feel for what serious yacht racing is all about. Once again, Gary Schneider has been the driving force behind the logistics of arranging slips and greeting the boats when they sail in. "This is a great opportunity for Shoreline to show the kind of Corinthian spirit that we are known for as well as work hand in hand with the City of Long Beach as partners."
However, the service the yacht club is providing does not stop there. Members of Shoreline Yacht Club have also volunteered and have been assigned crews to which they will play host family to. They will assist with transportation, questions and many other matters. On July 10, Shoreline Yacht Club will also be hosting a send-off reception for Transpac participants and visiting dignitaries. Continuing with the theme of service to the community, a slip has been reserved at the end of "Y"dock next to the club for the crew of B-Quest, the Challenged America entry of disabled sailors. This will save the crew from having to come up with alternate transportation from Rainbow Harbor just one-eighth of a mile away.
