Roy Disney's Pyewacket leads Philippe Kahn's Pegasus 77 (left) away from the Golden Gate at start of the Coastal Cup to Santa Catalina Island, but Pegasus 77 soon caught up and ran away to a record time of 26 hours 24 minutes 55 seconds for the 360-nautical mile race. Pyewacket dropped out 25 miles from the finish as the wind went light.

Roger Groh's Santa Cruz 70, Dasher, flirts with the rocks and later broke its rudder and pulled out at Monterey.

Stan and Sally Honey's Cal 40, Illusion, with Jon Andron and Skip Allan as crew, pounds its way through rough seas in 25-30 knots of breeze.

Karl Kwok's new Transpac 52, Beau Geste, with Gavin Brady and some other top New Zealand sailors on board, finished second only to Pegasus.
