Philippe Kahn's Pegasus (left) leads Transpac's big boats across the starting line in only 3 knots of wind, followed by Bob McNulty's Chance (dark blue hull) and Jim Demetriades' Transpac 52 Yassou.

The two new Transpac 52s -- David Janes' J-Bird III (front) and Jim Demetriades' Yassou -- check out the starting area.

Sequence of events develops as two Transpac veterans -- Bob Lane's elongated Medicine Man (left) and Al Micallef's rebuilt Merlin's Reata -- inch toward pin end of starting line seconds before the gun.

Medicine Man crew members scramble to avoid contact with Merlin's Reata as latter heads up to squeeze past the buoy at the pin end of the line.

Merlin's Reata drifts down into starting line buoy. New owner Al Micallef is under the white Stetson at left.
